Background
A description of the experience
May 1st
I was asked to Charlie Bain’s to tea this afternoon. I can’t say he’s got any thinner since I used to sit next to him at Miss Enid’s…………Charlie has a book of ghost stories. He asked me if I believe in ghosts and I said yes.
Then he wanted to know if I'd ever seen one, and I said, lots.
" Honour bright?" said he.
" Honour bright," said I.
" Well I never," said he “Weren't you afraid?"
" Not when they're nice ghosts," said I, " but I don't like nasty ones."
" The servants say this house is haunted," said he, " but pater says it's all rubbish, and flies into a rage when we talk about it. The slavies make out they can hear somebody going up the stairs, but they can't see the thing."
" I reckon they're quite right," said I, " I saw it myself. It’s a young woman. She has a dress which sticks out all round, and sort of makes a noise; but you mustn't tell anyone, because I may get into a row."
" I say !" said Charlie, "' do you really mean that, or are you fooling?"
" Honour bright," said I.
" Upon my Sam, you make me feel all funny," said he.
" Go on," said I, " she won't hurt you. She's quite a respectable kind of ghost, and means no harm."
After that it was time for me to go home.
