From Nothing so Strange - Arthur Ford
In my junior year I was called to St. Matthew’s Church, near Louisville, to substitute for a year during the minister's absence, and not long after our arrival one of the deacons very timidly asked me if I knew anything about spiritualism. Cautiously I acknowledged that I did. A shade bolder, he asked a few questions. A mite more audacious, I told a few of my experiences. He then astonished me by saying that a small group in the church was sitting once a week, experimenting at table-tipping. Would I join them? I would. Our meetings were secret. It was during these sessions that I was first hypnotized. On several occasions I did approximate trance but none of us knew what to do with the trance state once it was achieved.
