John Geiger – The Third man
During the Second World war, a seaman gunner spent 12 hours floating in the North Sea. The explosion that had destroyed his ship had blown off all of his clothing, except his socks, belt, life jacket and the sleeve of his coat. It was April, and he was “pretty cold”.
Four other surviving crewmen were in the water nearby. As night descended, he began to fear they would die before any rescue reached them. he suddenly began to experience bioscopic playback. He saw his fiancée, a pet dog from his childhood, scenes from schooldays. These were all episodes he had experienced, but had long forgotten. He began to scream, terrified that he was dying. The episode ended when one of the other crewmen slapped his face.
