Background
A description of the experience
Finasteride (INN, USAN, BAN) (brand names Proscar, and Propecia by Merck, among other generic names; former developmental code name MK-906) is a drug used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness (MPB).[sic] It is a type II and type III 5α-reductase inhibitor; 5α-reductase, an enzyme, converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Finasteride is used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Treatment provides about 30% improvement in hair loss after six months of treatment, and effectiveness only persists as long as the drug is taken.
Finasteride is sometimes used as an off label use in hormone replacement therapy for male-to-female transsexuals in combination with a form of estrogen due to its antiandrogen properties. However, little clinical research of finasteride use for this purpose has been conducted and evidence of efficacy is limited.
On Jun, 8, 2015: 5,408 people reported to have side effects when taking Finasteride. Among them, 32 people (0.59%) have Hallucination.
On Jun, 28, 2015: 5,412 people reported to have side effects when taking Finasteride. Among them, 91 people (1.68%) have Death.
