The Jacques Romano story – Dr Berthold Eric Schwartz
'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth' really means eye under an eye. It comes from the Hebrew word 'tachas' meaning 'under, being subservient'.
In effect it means place yourself in the other fellow's position [empathy]. How would you like your eye knocked out?
We should know this from the Ten Commandments which preached moderation and non violence.
