Background
A description of the experience
Rivastigmine
Rivastigmine is sold under the trade name Exelon
It is not quite the same as Donezepil being a cholinesterase inhibitor that inhibits both butyrylcholinesterase and acetylcholinesterase (unlike donepezil, which selectively inhibits acetylcholinesterase). It is used to treat mild to moderate dementia of the Alzheimer’s type and dementia due to Parkinson's disease.
The objective of the drug is to “allow patients to remain independent and ‘be themselves’ for longer”. Ironically, given the fact it can produce hallucinations, it has been used for “those with the more aggressive course of disease, such as those with a younger age of onset, a poor nutritional status, or those experiencing symptoms such as delusions or hallucinations”
Side effects may include nausea and vomiting.
