Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

This was inspired by an extract from the  National Geographic magazine article on LOVE. Dr Marazziti measured serotonin levels in the blood of 24 subjects who had fallen in love and obsessed about this person for at least 4 hours per day.  Marazzati compared the lovers’ serotonin levels with those of a group suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD and another group who were free of both passion and mental illness.  Levels of serotonin in both the group with OCD and the group with love sickness were 40% lower than those in the control group.  Dr Marazziti concluded that love and mental illness may be difficult to tell apart

‘Drugs are available to treat serotonin imbalance’ said Dr Marazziti ‘Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil have long been used to treat OCD, and as an anti depressant.  They could be used to ‘cure’ love sickness - dampen down the sex drive, dull the libido and depress the ability to fall in love’

A description of the experience

I'm so confused I cannot think, the doctors they seem sure
I’m high as a kite on loving, but depressed ‘cos I want more
That he’s the cause there is no doubt, but what’s the cure, who knows?
Oxytocin seems the answer, but attachment’s what makes it grow

But I’m not yet ‘attached’ to my dear love, a phrase that sounds so dull
I’m mad for him, I lust for him, the passion’s rich and full
I long for him, I pine for him, I’m sick with love and lust
Give me attachment if you have to, but only if you must

I’m obsessed by him – aah here’s the truth, I have an illness mental
Please treat me doctors with some care, I’m nutty, please be gentle
OCD, it sounds so grand, obsessed with him and love
The cure, more him, but even then it would never be enough

I plead with them, ‘It’s in your grasp please give me much more of him’
‘Impossible’ they say ‘ he’s far away, he’s happier at the gym’
‘But I am sick’, I plead with tears ‘Indeed you are’ they say
‘Serotonin that’s the answer. A dose of Prozac ever day’!

Dr Marazziti he got closer, pills and potions in his hand
‘For nutty people just like you we’ve decided love is banned’
It will be two pills every morning and three pills every night
There is no use with you complaining, no use putting up a fight

But I threw away their pills and potions, love sickness isn’t so bad
I want to love my darling sweet and doctors think me mad
So I live witha rampant sex drive, a libido to the sky
I dine on chunks of  opium in order to get the high

Then afterwards I suffer, as down and down I go.
Serotonin at rock bottom, oxytocin a no no
But who wants a life of nothing - Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil
I would rather love my sweet sweet love and them declare me ill.
