Hanscarl Leuner, in Germany, developed a system known as "guided affective imagery.' This system helps the client to free the imagination, define mental problems, and even check on the course of his or her psychological change during the course of therapy.
The actual techniques are quite extensive, but the basic process begins with teaching the patient to imagine neutral or positive mental pictures. The patient is then taken on imaginary journeys where he or she has to handle more threatening experiences.
A female client, for instance, might be taken to a deserted roadside where she must confront a motorist in a symbolic representation of a sexual encounter.
The imagery invoked during the waking dream will alert the therapist to problems the patient is facing in real life, as well as possible solutions to them.
