Beyond Biofeedback – Drs Elmer and Alyce Green
Our only view of the world is on our own living internal television screen. The occipital cortex is essentially the screen, and the eyes are two cameras that give us information about the frequencies and intensities of light.
When the eyes are open we say we are looking at the world, but it is the occipital cortex that we actually "look" at. What we "see" are millions of brain cells firing in appropriate ways to display the retinal activity.
Everything we have previously seen has an effect on what we presently see.
I may say "I see a chair," but what l actually see is the retinal picture apparently mixed with my previous images of chairs. Perception is not exact and accurate, as most people believe, but is different for each person, in part because of the contribution of different past experiences.

…. the eye is an energy transducer. It converts electromagnetic energy of certain wavelengths (described as red through violet) into nerve pulses. These pulses form an intricate code in the occipital brain. It is not the eye that sees, it is the "perceiver" in the brain, commonly called the sensorium. It is not the ear that hears, it is the sensorium. It is not the finger that feels, it is the sensorium.
