A description of the experience
Dante – The Divine Comedy INFERNO I
CANTO VI
We passed over the shadows which were beaten
Under the heavy rain, we put the soles of our feet
Down on the empty shapes which looked like bodies
They lay upon the ground, strewn here and there
All except one of them, who sat up quickly
When he saw us passing not far from him
O you who are conducted through this hell'
He said to me 'acknowledge me if you know me
You were full grown before I was unmade'
I said to him 'The anguish that you suffer
Is perhaps such, you are not recognisable
At least it seems to me I never saw you
But tell me who you are, put in this place
Which is so dreary that, if perhaps other penalties
Are more severe, none could be more displeasing'
............................
Y'ou citizens called me by the name of Ciacco.
For the pernicious fault of gluttony
As you see, now, the rain flattens me here'
