Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Comenius’s thought on morality and ethics imbue practically every sentence of his advice as such it is somewhat difficult to isolate any one quote that sums up his philosophy.
He advances the teaching of Aristotle on the need to teach how to investigate cause and effects of actions. He espouses the notion of ‘Don’t hurt’ as the starting point for teaching morality and of course LOVE as the driver to learning and human action.
It is interesting that Comenius views the teaching of morality as a sort of foundation stone of all other teaching.
‘The laying of such a foundation …. helps to make the pupils diligent and attentive’
A description of the experience
The Great Didactic of John Amos Comenius - Translated into English by M. W. Keatinge, M.A.1967
Not the sciences and arts alone should be taught in schools but morality as well……
... morals should be formed by working on the inward sources of action [cause], not by external explanations and analysis of virtues, which result in a superficial veneer of morality being given
