A description of the experience
Cimetidine Cimetidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that inhibits the production of acid in the stomach. It is largely used in the treatment of heartburn and peptic ulcers. It is marketed under the trade name Tagamet (sometimes Tagamet HB or Tagamet HB200).
Cimetidine became the first drug ever to reach more than $1 billion a year in sales, thus making it the first blockbuster drug. It potentiates both opiates and benzodiazepines, a fact that has not gone unnoticed in the so called ‘recreational community’
“Cimetidine reduces or inhibits production of liver enzymes responsible for the metabolization of opiates and benzodiazepines. Therefore, patients who are prescribed these medications may find that taking cimetidine in conjunction with the opiate and/or benzodiazepine will extend the latter drug's effectiveness, duration of action, or both, potentially allowing the patient to require a smaller dose of these habit-forming medicines while still getting equivalent relief of their symptoms”
Cimetidine is a known inhibitor of many isozymes of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system This inhibition forms the basis of the numerous drug interactions that occur between cimetidine and other drugs. For example, cimetidine interferes with metabolism of the hormone estrogen, enhancing estrogen activity. Cimetidine also affects the metabolism of methadone, sometimes resulting in higher blood levels and a higher incidence of side effects, and may interact with the antimalarial medication hydroxychloroquine
