The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences – Dr Penny Sartori
The following is from a lady who was changed by her NDE
I suffered a car accident many years ago and ended up with fractures of my pelvis, femur and clavicle. I also suffered some brain injury though not very serious. I was not in ITU and awoke on the ward. It was explained to me what had happened and I went back to 'sleep'.
I, too, travelled along a dark tunnel and towards a very bright light. I reached the light to find beautiful pastures and vivid blue skies. What struck me most was the sensation of utter contentment and bliss. I am unable to put into words the exact feeling that I experienced. I saw no dead relatives or friends, just a little wooden fence and I knew that if I crossed that fence, there was no return.
I was brought up in a Christian culture but I am agnostic. After my 'experience', I did have religious fervour and began to wear a crucifix. I knew without doubt that there was an afterlife and that physical matters were really insignificant. I'm afraid the feeling only lasted a few months and the hustle and bustle of working and general living soon returned me to my cynical self! In saying that, even taking into consideration other factors that may have prompted the experience, e.g. morphine, blood loss, I still have the memory of the peace that I felt and the fact that I had never experienced it before or have done since. Maybe it is the body’s natural endorphins preparing for death and making it a pleasant sensation rather than a frightening one.
It doesn't explain 'out-of-body' experiences, though! It is a fascinating subject and maybe one day there will be an answer.
