Blake, William - Nebuchadnezzar
Identifier
000985
Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
William Blake’s life was full of demons – see the biography. He attempted to expunge them by painting what he ‘saw’. This is called Nebuchadnezzar. The Bible describes how King Nebuchadnezzar was driven mad and forced to live like a wild animal as punishment for excessive pride. Note that the demons he is painting here are not 'pride' but all the early hellfire and horror he received from his education, the demons of psychological trauma.
