Background
A description of the experience
Amoxicillin formerly amoxycillin , and abbreviated amox, is a moderate-spectrum, bacteriolytic, lactam antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It is one of the most common antibiotics prescribed for children. This drug acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of cystic acne, acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, pneumonia, skin infections, urinary tract infections, salmonella, lyme disease, and chlamydia infections. It is also used for both the prevention and treatment of anthrax. In the USA it is used to prevent bacterial endocarditis. [The UK however does not recommend its use for infectious endocarditis prophylaxis].
The patent for amoxicillin has expired, thus amoxicillin is marketed under many trade names, including:
- Actimoxi, Alphamox, Amocla, AMK, Amoksibos, Amoxiclav Sandoz, Amoxidal
- Amoxin, Amoksiklav, Amoxibiotic, Amoxicilina, Amoxidal, Apo-Amoxi
- Bactox, Betalaktam, Bioxidona, Cilamox, Clamoxyl, Curam,
- Dedoxil, Dispermox, Duomox
- E-Mox, Enhancin, Gimalxina, Geramox
- Hiconcil, Isimoxin, Klavax, Klavocin, Klavox
- Lamoxy, Largopen, Moxatag, Moxilen, Moxypen, Moxyvit
- Nobactam, Novamoxin, Ospamox, Optamox
- Panklav, Pamoxicillin, Panamox, Polymox
- Samthongcillin, Senox, Sinacilin, Starmox
- Tolodina, Tormoxin, Wedemox, Wymox, Yucla, Zerrsox and Zimox.
- Amoxil
- Augmentin
- Trimox
As a consequence of this renaming, it is virtually impossible to keep track in a composite way of side-effects, hallucinations and deaths. The figures below are likely to be a gross underestimation.
On Dec, 31, 2016 32,879 people reported to have side effects when taking Amoxicillin. Among them, 194 people (0.59%) have Hallucinations
On Jan, 02, 2017 3,403 people reported to have side effects when taking Amoxicillin And Clavulanate Potassium. Among them, 22 people (0.65%) have Hallucination
On Dec, 26, 2016 1,959 people reported to have side effects when taking Amoxil.
Among them, 14 people (0.71%) have Hallucination
On Dec, 30, 2016 23,817 people reported to have side effects when taking Augmentin. Among them, 129 people (0.54%) have Hallucinations
On Jan, 19, 2017 768 people reported to have side effects when taking Trimox.
Among them, 3 people (0.39%) have Hallucination
Side effects
Side-effects include nausea, vomiting, rashes, and antibiotic-associated colitis. Loose bowel movements (diarrhea) also may occur. Rarer side-effects include mental changes, lightheadedness, insomnia, confusion, anxiety, sensitivity to lights and sounds, and unclear thinking. Immediate medical care is required upon the first signs of these side-effects.
The onset of an allergic reaction to amoxicillin can be very sudden and intense - emergency medical attention must be sought as quickly as possible. For some people who are allergic to amoxicillin the side effects can be deadly.
The hallucinations that are caused are nearly always attributable to mis-use and misprescription, allergic reactions and prescribing for illnesses that are non bacterial in origin
Hoigne syndrome as an acute non-allergic reaction to different drugs: case reports
[Article in Polish] - Zdziarski P; Wojskowa Stacja Sanitarno-Epidemiologiczna Wroc?aw.
In 1959 Hoigne described the first cases of pseudo-anaphylactic reactions induced by intramuscular administration of procaine penicillin G. This complication, characterized by acute psychological and neurological manifestations, is still of current interest. We report cases of patient, whose Hoigne syndrome was not due to procaine penicillin G (i.e. lidocaine, edan, azlocillin, gentamycin, klaritromycin and cefuroxime). It is accepted that Hoigne syndrome can be caused by lidocaine. Further Stell i.m. and Ojo OA published similar case report of Amoxycillin-induced hallucinations. These clinical observations indicate also that using term "acute non-allergic reaction to procaine penicillin G" as synonym of Hoigne syndrome is not precise.
