THE BLUE COFFIN
Another case of a mother's premonition of her child's death was investigated by the Society for Psychical Research. It came in a dream and portended death for two other children as well.
Annette Jones, the wife of a London tobacconist, had her dream while her little boy Peter was ill. In the dream a cart drove up to her house and the driver removed a black cloth from three coffins. Two of the coffins were white and one was blue. They were of three sizes, the blue coffin the largest. The driver left the larger white coffin with Mrs. Jones and drove off with the other two.
A few days later a friend of Annette's, Mrs. Devonshire, gave birth to a baby boy, Eric. Eric was healthy at first but his lungs collapsed and he died two weeks later, on a Friday. On Monday Peter, who was sixteen months old, also died. The Joneses, knowing that Eric would be buried on Wednesday, arranged to have Peter buried on the same day. The parish priest told Mr. and Mrs. Jones that another child who had just died would be buried at the same time.
The third child was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jupp, whom the Joneses did not know. There were three coffins in the church. The larger of the white coffins held the body of Peter Jones, the smaller that of the infant Eric. The Jupp boy, who had died at the age of six, was buried in a blue coffin, the largest of the three.
