Background
A description of the experience
Valproate ; - Valproic acid or Valproate Sodium ; - is used to treat epilepsy. Valproate is believed to affect the function of the neurotransmitter GABA in the human brain [see GABA receptors] but it also blocks the voltage-gated sodium channels and T-type calcium channels. These mechanisms make valproic acid a ‘broad spectrum anti-epileptic’. It is also ‘abused and misused’ for its GABA activity

Trade names include Depakote , Depakote Er , Depakene , Depacon, Depakine, Divalproex , Epival , and Stavzor.
Valproic acid, one of the most commonly prescribed anticonvulsants that is also used to treat certain psychological conditions, is a known inhibitor of folic acid, and as such, has been shown to cause neural tube defects and cases of spina bifida and cognitive impairment in the newborn.
Because of this considerable risk, those mothers who must continue to use valproic acid or its derivatives during pregnancy to control their condition (as opposed to stopping the drug or switching to another drug or to a lesser dose) "are often advised to take folic acid supplements under the direction and guidance of their health care providers".
