Rebirth
True rebirth experiences can be gruesome and violent. All of them occur spiritually in the trance condition, but they can seem extraordinarily real. One can feel pain, or one can lose all sensation and lose the body.
There are numerous sorts of rebirth – dismemberment, being eaten by giant birds, being boiled in cauldrons, being turned into energy clouds and reformed. Decapitation is just one of many types.
The story of Osiris, where the body is dismembered and spread about before being put back together again is also the description of a rebirth experience.
They were a typical shamanic experience once, part of the initiation that the candidate went through in order that they had the powers needed to cope with being a fully blown shaman.
The severed head is a symbol of rebirth much as dismemberment, disembowelling and so on are. However beheading can also have other symbolism. See
Crucifixion can also be a rebirth experience, but I have chickened out on this one and not given it a description for fear of treading on too many toes
Functionally we lose old function and are given new functions. Thus it is a sort of waking software/functional update, which is as unpleasant as it sounds especially as all this amendment to our systems can be felt.
If we continue with this analogy it is also not a bug fix, it is the implementation of a new version of the software which if you see what happens to your computer usually involves a shutdown and a restart and that is what happens during a rebirth – that is exactly how it feels – a shutdown, a sort of death, and afterwards, a restart as a new you functionally; you are really not sure you are the same person. Often you are not.
