Confuse by using oddly constructed sentences
We all look for grammatically correct sentences and words in the ‘right’ place within sentences. Milton Erickson misused words, a small word in the wrong place or the wrong context. Look at the following sentence, 'to remain into' is not grammatically correct, nor is 'in hallucinating'. All designed to throw the person, he moves on leaving them with short sentences that aren't quite right, that conflict with their rules for language. Language is a left brain activity and as such it is extremely important it is subdued, knocked into touch as it were.
