Common steps and sub-activities
Word repetition with small irregularities
The learning function looks for patterns, if you give it patterns but then change the wording very very slightly each time, it has the effect of really confusing the reasoning system, because it thinks it is working with a pattern but finds it isn’t.
Within the sentence, words can be repeated. Alternatively phrases can be repeated but each time the sentence must be just slightly different. Just different enough to mean that it has a befuddling effect.
Hypnotic Realities – Milton Erickson
Now listen to my words.................... very carefully........................... listen to them very carefully............ and understand them.................
The above sentence also helps in focusing the person as the implication is that the person has not really been paying enough attention up to then. Rhymed words can also be used instead of repetition of the same word because for the reasoning and learning process a rhyme is a pattern.
Hypnotic Realities – Milton Erickson
Don't enter trance until
you sit all the way down
in that chair
there
But don't go all the way in until you sit all the way down in the chair
All the way down
You are all the way down in the chair
and all the way from Colorado springs
You knew you did not want to go into a trance
You knew you would prefer something else
as you think it over
